The 5 Senses of Touring Senior Living – Sight, Smell, Sound, Taste, and Feeling

When touring a community for the first time make sure you pay attention to the surroundings. The sales person will likely take you to a discovery room where you sit down at a table and ask you questions so they can learn more about your situation. Then, they will take you on a tour of the community. As you walk around, does everything look clean and orderly or have stains and disorganized? Does the community swell like freshly baked bread or cookies or like urine? Does the community feel warm, and welcoming or more institutional? All these things are key indicators in deciding if a senior living community is right for you or your loved one. Remember to request a free meal and taste the food to make sure the food is delicious and nutritious. Connect with us now to find out more about touring or visiting senior living communities.

Tip #9

How to Negotiate with the Senior Living Providers.

Senior living has its own lingo and to get the best deals we can help you understand this lingo and help you save up to tens of thousands of dollars. Check the box to learn more about negotiating with senior living communities.

Senior living has its own lingo and without an understanding of the terms and conditions you likely will not get the best deals. We can help you understand this lingo and help you save time and money. Senior living communities use terms that can be linked to traditional apartment leases such as: “Executive Director” instead of “Property Manager”, “Residency Agreement” instead of “Rental Contract”, and “Move-in Fee” instead of a “Deposits”. Knowing this information can be crucial when negotiating with senior living providers. It is rarely advisable to cut care costs by negotiating the care that will be provided, as the first month is critical to a successful move-in. Negotiating provided care could be costly in the future with hospital bills, and skilled nursing co-pays if you or your loved one are not getting the care they need. Learn more about what you should and should not try to negotiate by calling us at 801-546-9556

Find out now if you are eligible for, or how to become eligible for, these state and federal programs to help pay for senior living costs. When dealing with senior living there are specific programs that are meant to help cover these costs, as most people cannot afford to pay $4,000-$10,000 per month. Seniors have likely worked 60+ years, and it is disheartening to see their life savings disappear in a matter of months or years. Call us now at 801-546-9556 to find out more about the public benefits that are available to you or your loved one and how to apply and qualify for these programs.

Tip #7

The Ins and Outs of Care Levels and Care Costs.

Care levels are confusing and always seem to be changing in senior living so it seems impossible to pinpoint monthly costs. Check the box and click submit to learn more and ensure you are getting what you need without overpaying.

Care levels are confusing and always seem to be changing in senior living so it seems impossible to pinpoint monthly costs. Care facilities typically have two types of fees: rent and care costs. The care costs are determined by examining a resident’s need for assistance in their Activities of Daily Living or ADL’s. These ADL’s range from simple reminders, medication management, dressing assistance, full bathroom and shower assistance, to transports, and even behaviors. Each facility charges differently with some offering package pricing and some offering a la carte pricing. Email us now at [email protected] to find out more about how care levels affect care costs at specific senior living communities in Utah.

Tip #6

The Extra Costs That No One Talks About

These extra costs can add up if not planned for, and can make or break a budget. Click the box to find out what costs are usually not included in senior living and how to best work around them.

Senior Living is often times compared to a cruise ship on land but if you know anything about cruise ships you know not everything is included. This is also true for senior living communities. It is always best to ask about care costs, beauty salon charges, transportation costs, laundry costs, cable and internet costs, and large or outside event costs. Another big cost that is often overlooked is the extra charge that the pharmacy charges to have prescriptions delivered to the community, if the community is managing the medications. If you are interested in learning more about the average costs and what is reasonable or unreasonable send us a text message at 801-326-4862.

Caregiver Ratios and How This Will Impact Me or My Loved One

Caregivers are the biggest expense in senior living. You do not want to move into a community that is not staffed appropriately. Click here to learn about staffing ratios and what is appropriate for you or your loved one.

Caregivers are the biggest expense in senior living. You do not want to move in to a community that is not staffed appropriately. There are four critical times in which someone that needs care will likely need it the most: morning, weal times, before bed, and overnight. Request to see the assisted living Facility caregiver schedule to see how they are staffing. The schedule will tell you a lot about management, what they can and cannot do, and whether they have nurses. On average, a good assisted living facility will staff one caregiver to 9-13 residents during busy times and a good memory care facility will staff one caregiver to 5-7 residents during busy times. Management Matters – Get to know the Director, Not Just The Salesperson.

The salesperson’s job is to sell the community, but the person that actually runs the community is going to be the most important relationship you will ever build in senior living. Learn how best to go about building a relationship with the Administrator or Executive Director.

The sales person’s job is to sell the community, but the person that actually runs the community is going to be the most important relationship you will ever build in senior living. The Executive Director is the decision maker in the community as they are hired to ensure all processes and procedures within the community are functioning effectively and appropriately. The Executive Director typically has several managers that report directly to them, so it may be worthwhile to ask to meet the Head Nurse, the Dining Service Manager, the Activities Manager, and Housekeeping/Maintenance Manager. All of these roles come into play to create a happy, safe, and home-like atmosphere. If you would like to learn more about these roles please email us at [email protected]
